Your GLP-1 Is Doing Its Job...But Are You Doing Yours?

The 7 habits that determine whether your weight loss lasts long after the prescription ends.

If you’ve been following the news lately, you’ve probably heard about GLP-1 medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, or Zepbound®. These medications have transformed the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, helping many people lose significant amounts of weight while improving blood sugar control and reducing the risk of obesity-related health conditions.

As a registered dietitian, I’m genuinely excited that we finally have another evidence-based tool to help people struggling with obesity. For many individuals, these medications quiet the constant “food noise,” reduce hunger, and make healthy choices feel more manageable.

But here’s something I tell my clients all the time:

The medication can help you lose weight. It can’t teach you how to live at your healthy weight.

Think of it this way. Buying a beautiful piano doesn’t automatically make someone a musician. The instrument is incredibly valuable—but it’s the practice that creates the music.

The same is true with GLP-1 medications.

They are a powerful tool, but lasting success comes from the daily habits you build while they’re helping you.

Why This Matters

Research has shown that many people regain weight after stopping GLP-1 medications if lifestyle habits haven’t been established. That isn’t because they lack willpower. It’s because obesity is a chronic disease influenced by biology, hormones, environment, stress, sleep, and genetics.

The medication treats many of those biological drivers. When it’s discontinued, those signals often return.

That’s why this period of weight loss is such an incredible opportunity.

Instead of simply focusing on losing pounds, think about building the skills you’ll use for years to come.

Here are seven habits worth practicing.

1. Make Protein Your Priority

One of the biggest concerns during weight loss is losing muscle along with fat.

Muscle isn’t just for athletes. It supports your metabolism, protects your bones, improves strength, and helps you stay independent as you age.

Because GLP-1 medications reduce appetite, many people unintentionally eat too little protein.

Aim to include a quality protein source at each meal, such as:

  • Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Eggs
  • Chicken or turkey
  • Fish
  • Lean beef
  • Tofu or tempeh
  • Beans and lentils

If you’re feeling full quickly, eat your protein first before moving on to other foods.

2. Lift Something Besides Your Coffee Cup

Strength training is one of the best investments you can make while losing weight.

It helps preserve lean muscle, supports bone health, improves insulin sensitivity, and makes everyday activities easier.

No, you don’t have to become a bodybuilder.

Resistance bands, body-weight exercises, dumbbells, or strength classes two to three times each week can make a tremendous difference.

Besides, carrying all the grocery bags into the house in one trip deserves Olympic recognition.

3. Eat for Nutrition, Not Just Fewer Calories

When your appetite decreases, every bite matters.

Instead of asking,

“How little can I eat?”

Try asking,

“How much nutrition can I fit into this meal?”

Build meals around:

  • Protein
  • Colorful fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Healthy fats
  • Calcium-rich foods
  • High-fiber choices when tolerated

Your body still needs vitamins, minerals, and energy—even if it isn’t asking for as much food.

4. Stay Hydrated

Many people on GLP-1 medications don’t realize they’re drinking less simply because they aren’t thinking about food or beverages as often.

Dehydration can contribute to:

  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness

Carry a water bottle, sip throughout the day, and increase fluids during the summer heat or exercise.

5. Respect Your Hunger—and Your Fullness

For some people, this may be the first time in years that hunger feels manageable.

That’s an incredible opportunity to relearn what comfortable fullness feels like.

Slow down.

Eat without distractions when possible.

Pause halfway through your meal to evaluate fullness.

Notice how your body feels instead of relying on a clean plate to tell you you’re finished.

These skills can last long after the medication ends.

6. Don’t Ignore Sleep and Stress

Sleep and stress have powerful effects on appetite, cravings, energy, and metabolic health.

Poor sleep can increase hunger hormones, while chronic stress often drives emotional eating.

You can’t meditate your way out of every stressful day, but small habits help:

  • Create a consistent bedtime.
  • Take a short evening walk.
  • Practice deep breathing.
  • Put the phone away before bed.
  • Ask for help when you need it.

Healthy habits aren’t only about what’s on your plate.

7. Build a Lifestyle You Actually Enjoy

This may be the most important habit of all.

If your weight loss plan makes you miserable, it probably isn’t sustainable.

  • Find movement you enjoy.
  • Cook meals you actually like.
  • Leave room for birthday cake.
  • Enjoy vacation.
  • Celebrate holidays.
  • Laugh with friends.

Health isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating routines you can imagine following next year—not just next Monday.

Here’s the Truth About Long-Term Success

The most successful people I work with aren’t perfect. They don’t always make the healthiest choice. They have vacations, stressful weeks, celebrations, and occasional drive-thru dinners. What sets them apart is that they don’t quit after one imperfect meal. They simply return to the habits that support their health. Again and again. That’s consistency.

And consistency beats perfection every time.

Remember What the Medication Can’t Do

A GLP-1 medication can:

  • Reduce appetite
  • Slow stomach emptying
  • Improve blood sugar
  • Support weight loss

But it can’t:

  • Plan your meals
  • Teach grocery shopping skills
  • Help you navigate restaurants
  • Build muscle
  • Improve sleep
  • Manage stress
  • Prepare you for vacations
  • Change emotional eating patterns
  • Build confidence around food

That’s where nutrition coaching makes the difference.

The Bottom Line

If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, don’t think of this as simply a weight-loss journey.

Think of it as a habit-building journey.

Every balanced meal, every walk, every strength workout, every glass of water, and every healthy decision is helping you build a foundation that can support your health long after the prescription is filled.

At Nutrition Coaching 4U, we believe medications can be an excellent tool—but they work best when paired with practical nutrition guidance, compassionate coaching, and sustainable habits that fit your real life.

Because the goal isn’t simply losing weight. It’s gaining the confidence, knowledge, and healthy lifestyle to keep feeling your best for years to come.
